Surgery or hair transplants: Surgical hair restoration approaches include various versions of hair transplantation (taking hair from the back and putting it near the front) or scalp reduction (cutting away bald areas and stitching the rest together). Transplant procedures have improved greatly in recent years. They can produce much more attractive and natural-looking results than older methods that sometimes leave a “checkerboard” or hair plug look. Many transplant patients now take Propecia to maintain or keep what they’ve transplanted. When considering a hair transplant, check the surgeon’s credentials and experience carefully. Micrografts are some of the newest techniques whereby surgeons transplant single one to two hair follicles. Hair transplants may be very expensive and time-consuming procedures ranging widely anywhere from $1,000-$20,000, depending on the number of hair grafts transplanted. Typically, 500 or more hairs may be transplanted in a session.
Some of our readers and subscribers prefer the liquid gel biotin supplements because they seem to digest easier. Other than your diet and supplements you can also use biotin topically as well. Look for biotin oil or biotin hair shampoo to apply to your hair topically.
Iron is perhaps one of the most important minerals your body requires because of its role in manufacturing hemoglobin in your red blood cells. Hemoglobin is the carrier of oxygen in red blood cells which transport oxygen to various parts of the body, including your hair.
Hair cells (like all cells) are coated with a fatty membrane. NYC nutritionist Brooke Alpert says that for cells to grow and multiply, it’s about “keeping their fatty membranes healthy, which starts with having the right kind of fat in your diet.” That menu includes rich sources of Biotin: salmon, oysters, avocados and nuts.
Hi Suzanne! Thanks for your comments, I’ve had a short hair cut and while it was a nice change I did find it incredibly hard to manage! I am a big fan of oils, in general, to be honest, I agree cold pressed castor oil is fantastic for eyelashes and hair but in my personal experience I didn’t find that it worked better or less than coconut or olive oil. But, having said that I do know people who swear by it. I would say it’s not an exact science so whichever you prefer and works for you. I like to get mini bottles wherever possible and out what works for me.

Good for more than your brain, omega-3 fatty acids nourish your whole noggin. The essential nutrient reaches both the hair shaft and the cell membranes in your scalp, nourishing the follicles and promoting healthy hair growth, according to Batayneh. Plus, they add elasticity to your hair, preventing it from breaking off and ending up in your shower drain. But get this—the body can’t produce omega 3-fatty acids on its own; whatever you eat is what your body gets. So dig in!
In rare cases finasteride may cause a skin rash, erectile dysfunction, less desire for sex or tenderness in the nipple area. If you do experience these side effects, they may well disappear quickly as your body gets used to finasteride. If you are at all concerned about the side effects you should stop taking the treatment and consult a doctor.

I had my chemo ended in Feb 2014, but until now my hair still doesn’t grow back to normal. It gets long, but very thin. Actually i found that it’s not about the problem of getting hair grow longer, but getting hair grow in full head. Before my cancer, I had my hair with high volume. It has been nearly 4 years now, is there anyway to trigger the growth?

This is the only over-the-counter medication for hair loss approved by the FDA for use by both men and women. It won’t rescue a receding hairline. It does stimulate hair growth, although scientists aren’t quite sure how it works.
Staying hydrated is crucial in tissue growth and health. The hair shaft itself is largely made up of water. Set a goal to drink AT LEAST 64 ounces each day. Also, avoid carbonated sodas all of which will weaken your immune system and make your hair more likely to fall out.
Protect it from the elements. The sun, air pollution, and pool chlorine are among the environmental elements that can damage your hair. If your hair is particularly fragile, it’s a good idea to protect it, just as you would your skin.
Tight ponytails, or braids, or any other tight styles put strain on your hair roots, and can lead to hair loss. If you wear tight styles every day, hair may stop growing permanently from areas it is pulled most from, causing a bald patch. Once in a while is fine, but wearing tight styles every day is a big no no. For daily wear opt for loose updos, ponytails or braids to keep hair under control, but without any damage.
Your hair is loosely held to its follicles after a shower so brushing your hair will cause excessive hair fall. Furthermore, avoid rubbing your hair when you’re drying it with a towel. Use a t-shirt and dab your hair and leave it to dry on its own.
Hey , Thanks for the AWESOME advice there . (; But I was wondering .. Does tieing up your hair really cause Hair breakage ? Some sites says it does cause breakage and other sites says tieing up your hair is healthy , and it makes it grow faster ?
Under normal conditions, scalp hairs live for about three years (the anagen, or growing, phase); they then enter the telogen, or resting, phase. During the three-month telogen period, the hair root shrivels up into a small “club,” then the hair falls out. It is therefore normal to lose about 100 hairs every day, more of them on days when shampooing loosens the hairs that are ready to fall out. The hairs are then replaced by the body.
Hi Maria, There is no telling how your hair will react to the bleach, as everyone’s is different. However, it is unlikely that your har will split at the roots – it splits at the end as this is where hair is weakest. I would recommend putting as much nutrition back into it as possible by using a good-quality hair mask or coconut oil treatment. I hope this helps 🙂
Hi Nathalie, sorry to hear this! I think all the tips in the article should help. Especially the diet tips and use of coconut oil when massaging your hair and scalp. Please try it out, if it doesn’t help it might be worth seeking professional advice.
Heat styling can fry your hair and keep it from growing long and strong. So if you’re planning on straightening your hair, let it air dry first, instead of piling on the heat. (*DON’T EVER STRAIGHTEN IT WET*) And before you use a hot tool, coat your hair with a protective styler, like a heat protectant spray, before you ruin your perfect tendrils.
Hi Lewis! Thanks for joining the discussion. I have a similar problem in that my hair at the back of my head take longer to grow than the front! I would try the inversion method and concentrate on these areas alone so you’ll be boosting the blood flow around the sides. Make sure you measure your hair before and after to see whether it’s worked on not. Remember, massage those sides every day for five minutes for seven days.

“For the past several years, we’ve performed FUE in more than 95 percent of cases,” says Alan Bauman, M.D., a hair-loss specialist in Boca Raton, Florida. “It’s a shorter, less-painful recovery and completely eliminates linear scarring along the back of the head.”
A $50 bottle of this medication will last you around 3 months if you’re applying it twice daily. It can take as long as 4 months to begin http://premier-pharmacy.com/product-category/antibiotics/ seeing regrowth after applying minoxidil.
The only topical treatment that has been approved by the FDA for hair loss in women is minoxidil, better known by the brand name Women’s Rogaine ($44 for a 4-month supply; amazon.com). “Topical minoxidil is the gold standard standard of treatment,” Dr. Zeichner says. “It helps lengthen the active growing stage of hairs and promotes healthy delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicle.”
I know this is not really part of the article, but if my hair has lots of split ends that reaches to my scalp, do I have no choice but to chop it off? My hair is at shoulder length and it has been like that for 2 years and it’s the same length. My hair is not that fried but it’s pretty damaged. I did the unthinkable and I chopped off the side hairs underneath to let them grow healthy and fresh again. It kinda looks stupid now but will this help me of getting the short hairs long again? Any tips?
I had a big problem going on with dandruff, which I got treated with a doctor, and it didn’t work. So, I ended the treatment. And now it has been 5 years since I have dandruff in my hair, probably too little but my stress level is also increasing. I have also stopped eating Dal which I used to for over 1.5 years. I have also tried to use shampoos like head & shoulders and others, they didn’t work at all.
