There you have it. As of now, ‘The big three’ (minoxidil, finasteride, and ketoconazole) are still the best treatment for male pattern baldness. And, well, one could say even a cure, since if you start treating your hair loss with these early on, you can quite likely hold on to your hair for a lifetime.

Below, we’re sharing Philip Kingsley hair and scalp expert Anabel Kingsley’s five tips for combatting hair loss. Whether it’s that individuals with longer locks should avoid tight hairstyles (“because they put extreme stress on the hair and scalp, resulting in a type of hair loss called ‘traction alopecia'”) or that you should try to reduce your anxiety about it (because “stress is known to exacerbate hair thinning”), Kingsley’s recommendations are spot on.

With a hair transplant, hair is removed from one part of the scalp and then implanted where you’re thinning. Tiny “follicular units” of two to four hairs are transplanted; this can be effective even for women with diffuse thinning and few areas of “donor hair.” In a survey of hair transplant surgeons led by dermatologist Walter Unger, MD, over half said that at least 40 percent of women with female pattern hair loss are candidates for surgery; many of those doctors believe that up to 80 percent of women with thinning hair can see successful results. ($3,000 to $15,000, depending on number of grafts and transplant sessions)

An essential oil, rosemary has strong antiseptic properties that help treat flaky scalp, dandruff and infections—all of which contribute to hair loss. It is also a natural hair loss treatment that acts as a potent stimulant when applied directly. And, as discussed in the International Journal of Biotechnology, rosemary oil has superior antibacterial and antioxidant properties, both of which lead to noticeable hair regrowth.

Laser hair rejuvenation treatment for hair loss consists of using a low-level laser light from either a laser-comb, a hand held device or even a laser helmet to stimulate hair follicles. Several double blind controlled trials have been conducted on laser devices to study their efficacy in treating male and female pattern hair loss. The results have been quite promising in that; considerable improvement was seen in the number of new hair as well as the density of existing hair. Increase in terminal hair count was even seen to be comparable to the results seen with 5% Minoxidil solution. Further research is necessary to define optimal treatment the duration of the results and the use of laser devices in other forms of alopecia. The positive aspect of this therapy is that it is quite affordable and the patient can even buy handheld laser devices and use them safely in the comfort of his/her home without any adverse effects.

Fortunately, Lipogaine has a hair loss treatment just for women. It consists of 2% Minoxidil – and Minoxidil is the only proven means to treat female hair loss. We also like the fact that Lipogaine also has a Sensitive Scalp product just for women, as it does for men.

People have tried using this drug by applying it directly to the skin. Research shows that Minoxidil with a concentration of 5% produces dramatically better results than the other iteration with a concentration of just 2%. The results of the study show moderate hair growth among 19% of the total sample.

The sexual side effects of Propecia may continue after you stop taking it. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about these side effects. Propecia may also cause decrease in blood prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels, and can affect the PSA blood test.

Hi Sanchit, hair oils and a good diet – with a food supplement to help you top up if you like – can help the condition of your hair, but they cannot treat a hair loss condition, such as male pattern baldness. There are clinically-proven medications for male hair loss available although the oral DHT blocker (finasteride) cannot be taken by men under the age of 18. You can find out more on our hair loss treatments page.

I want to caution people against using Mintop (or minoxidil), an anti-hypertensive medication. If you read in various forum about the horrible side-effects you will want to keep away from it. Some of the side-effects of minoxidil include: redness and irritation at the treated area, unwanted hair growth, contact dermatitis, irritation of eyes, early wrinkles – it can actually age your face (read the reviews on forums), dark circles under the eyes, bloated eyelids, and many more.

This is the only over-the-counter medication for hair loss approved by the FDA for use by both men and women. It won’t rescue a receding hairline. It does stimulate hair growth, although scientists aren’t quite sure how it works.

Lower your stress. Since being stressed out can cause hair loss, taking measures to decrease your stress level might help to slow it down. If you lead a high-stress life, try the following measures to calm down on a daily basis:

During the procedure, a small section of a hairy scalp is removed (donor area) and the remaining skin is stitched together. Then, small groups of hair are carefully separated out from the donor area and inserted into the bald area.[13]

This treatment includes light therapy that is conducted every week, two to three times. It can take 26 weeks to a year to see any results from this treatment. The laser treatment exposes your skin to ultraviolet rays and, therefore, poses some risk of skin cancer, pigmentation, nausea, etc. And for these risks, it is not very often recommended by doctors.

Another product that may slow hair loss is used in shampoos that fight dandruff. It’s called Ketoconazole. It slows down the damage that DHT does to hair follicles by reducing the production of testosterone. Although a 1% is easy to find, you’ll need a prescription to purchase the more effective 2% concentration.

So please suggest and guide me mam apart from hair rinse over my scalp that I do every alternate day as per your sayings if there is any solution for my edges of hair that won’t make it dry and will rather make it thicker smoother and longer in volume.

Congenital Hypotrichosis: This type of hair loss generally affects a person at birth and usually stays with them for the length of their lives. The majority of cases of this kind of hair loss are caused by genetic defects.

Hi, I need help quite desperately. The first photo that I have posted was 6 years ago, when I was 16. The second photo is a few days old. I’m 22 now and in the years between the two photos, I have suffered from stress, anxiety and depression. This is the only thing that I can think of that has caused the hair fall since I exercise regularly and eat healthy food. For some years, during college, My sleeping habits were terrible. I wouldn’t sleep at all or would sleep only in the day for months. I suppose this could also have something to do with it. I really want to grow my hair back!!!! Please help!! Also, I have long curly hair. Because it is curly, I oil regularly, for extra smoothness but also use copious amounts of conditioner. It just isn’t manageable without conditioner. I’m afraid though, that all my hair will fall out soon. PLEASE HELP! The third photo is of my hair type. Long and curly.

Also, we wanted to provide you with a wide range of options, which is why we included everything from hair loss foams and liquids and derma rollers. After all, you may want to experiment to find what works best for you. And not every product listed in our review is suitable for everyone.

Trichotillomania (trick-uh-til-uh-mey-knee-uh): This medical disorder causes people to repeatedly pull out their own hair. They often feel a constant urge to pull out the hair on the scalp. Some sufferers say they feel compelled to pull out their eyelashes, nose hairs, eyebrows, and other hairs on their bodies.

The Journal of Dermatology published a study that found that onion juice overwhelmingly supports hair growth. After applying onion juice to the scalp twice a day for six weeks, 20 out of 23 participants saw positive results and reported that onion juice is a natural hair loss treatment that actually works. Onions have long been loved as a natural hair loss treatment because their sulfur content helps increase blood circulation, they promote collagen growth, and they contain antibacterial properties that treat scalp infections. To use, work onion juice into your scalp and let sit for 15 minutes. Then rinse using your regular shampoo.

The chemical indirectly to blame for genetic hair loss is a naturally occurring enzyme called 5 Alpha Reductase. In those who are susceptible to Male Pattern Baldness, this enzyme acts upon the male sex hormone testosterone, converting it into the more powerful derivative, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is this DHT which causes the follicles to shrink and become less productive. Generally speaking, the follicles are often not lost, but the hair they produce gradually becomes too small to be seen clearly with the naked eye. The result is Male Pattern Baldness.

For use, I mixed ten Chinese hibiscus flowers with two cups of coconut oil and heated them till charred. After that, strain them to collect the oil which I applied to my hair every day before bedtime and wash them in the morning.

Regaine and Lipogaine were the same price on Ebay so I got the latter. If it works I might continue for a few months. I hope my hair doesn´t start falling / stop growing after I stop using these products….Thanks one more time ?

Thanks for your response and awesome article! Do you recommend sticking with minoxidil for a period of time (i.e. 6 months) before starting finasteride or do it all at once? I would be on finasteride now if I wasn’t nervous about the potential side effects so my plan was to wait to see if minoxidal does anything for me over the next 3 months or so (at that point I will have been on it ~ 6 months). My shedding has certainly reduced so hopefully it is starting to work. I’m in the very early stages of hair loss. No one would notice (except me and my wife). Just looks my hair part on the top of my head even though it really is thinning.
