PRESCRIPTION REMEDIES: If you don’t respond to minoxidil, your doctor might prescribe antiandrogen medications, which may slow hair loss and even stimulate growth in some women. “They inhibit male hormones that can exacerbate hair loss,” explains Dr. Mirmirani. In select cases, she may prescribe finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, which blocks an enzyme that regulates the production of androgens. Because the medication causes birth defects, it is FDA approved only for men. “In premenopausal women who are no longer childbearing, finasteride can be used off label,” Dr. Mirmirani notes.
Some enterprising researchers had the notion that applying minoxidil topically, directly on the head, might grow hair on balding areas. Well it did this to varying degrees depending on the extent of the hair loss. For it’s time, this treatment was revolutionary.
I’m 55 years old and have noticed hair thinning on the top of my scalp could you tell me the best treatment available to prevent further thinning as with all the information on hair loss I’m finding the right solution to my problem rather confusing
I know the struggle. There is hope. Give it a try. Then come back and post your story so other women can keep the flame of hope alive 🙂 It was the reviews that convinced me to try this in the first place–I must have read all of them.
I finally gave in and started taking propecia (1.25mg/day) ~15 weeks ago as Rogaine clearly wasn’t going to stop my hair falling out . . . . .the good thing is that I have had ZERO side affects. In fact it also seemed (so I thought) to stop my hair loss for the first 4 weeks or so. However for the last 6 weeks or so, i have been losing hair faster than ever before. I have read that this common typically between the third and fourth month of taking this. Have you heard anything like that? I hope that is the case and it slows soon. I have continued Rogaine liquid twice a day as well as dandruff shampoo a few times a week.
Men who’ve tried it and spoke about on the internet also claimed it didn’t have much effect. This is, of course, anecdotal evidence. But there was never any hype about saw palmetto producing any significant results.

Domen, I was reading some articles and also the links you’ve provided in your other comments above – they say both Finesteride and Minoxidil only check further hair loss and thicken existing hair – but both can’t re-generate hair that’s already gone from bald spots. I guess the effectiveness of these 2 medications are quite proportionate to age of the native! At 42, I guess, I am old ? Atleast according to Indian standards!!
To get Avodart, you will have to convince your doctor to give you a prescription. Personally, I have not tried the drug. But if you have extremely aggressive hair loss and believe it has a very negative impact on your life, talk with your doctor.

I’ve used Rogaine for several years and if used twice a day as recommended, it works well. I don’t like the “foam”, only the liquid. The foam tends to make my hair a bit ‘greasy’ or shall I say ‘oily.’ Perhaps that adds to my hair being a little oily, naturally.
Natural hair loss in women treatments are an obvious alternative to drugs. Their first advantage is that they don’t have any side effects. hair replacement, such treatments as Saw Palmetto were used by men since ancient times. The way it is supposed to work is to cause minor damage to your skin so it starts to heal and ‘regenerate,’ as it wouldn’t do so otherwise. It should also increase collagen and help better absorb nutrients in the area.
After shampooing my hair, I apply a styling gel and then blow dry. How do you suggest I incorporate the product in my daily regimen. Also, I’ve read a few comments complaining that the regrowth product can be greasy. The evening application would not be a problem. And, finally, why is the men’s regrowth treatment 3% and the women’s 2%? The most notable competitor to Bosley uses 3%. Just an observation.
I would like ad mine here. I usually apply 1tbs yogurt, 1tbs mayonnaise, 1tbs honey, 1 egg and 1 slice of lemon juice. I mix all these ingredients well and then apply if on my scalp, and root to tip of my hair and keep it for 40 minutes and it really works very well.
Playing around with your haircut can sometimes mask the issue, so talk to your stylist about a style that will add volume and bounce, making hair appear thicker. Simply shifting your part can work wonders, and changing up your color can help, too. Light reflects more off lighter hair, so the color provides less contrast between the hair and the scalp, concealing any empty patches. Additionally, a light perm or wave will give hair more body and make it look thicker, and frequent trims will help prevent breakage.
If it’s serious, consider an Rx. Some women are genetically predisposed to female-pattern hair loss, and birth control pills can suppress overproduction of male hormones. At menopause, thinning increases; if you’re on hormone therapy, it may minimize hair loss.

“We all shed around one hundred to one hundred fifty hairs per day,” says Paradi Mirmirani, MD, a dermatologist in Vallejo, CA, who specializes in hair disorders. But if you’re losing more than that (you can tell if you see clumps of hair in the shower drain), your part is getting wider, or your hair has become significantly finer, you may be dealing with female pattern hair loss, a genetic condition that affects 30 million American women. Although FPHL (also called androgenetic alopecia) can begin as early as your 20s, it’s most common after menopause. “Multiple genes play a role, and they have an equal probability of being inherited from your mother’s or father’s side,” explains Dr. Mercurio.
If your doctor determines that you don’t have these other, more serious health issues, or resolving them doesn’t minimize symptoms, your next stop is the dermatologist’s office. She will perform a scalp exam and take a detailed medical and family history to determine why your hair is thinning and help you develop a treatment plan.
