Dutasteride works similarly to finasteride, but it may be more effective. Like finasteride, dutasteride inhibits the activity of type II 5-alpha reductase. However, dutasteride additionally inhibits type I of the enzyme. Blocking both types of the enzyme lowers DHT even more and reduces the risk of damage to hair follicles.

For the short primer: Hair continuously grows out of a single follicle for a period of about four years, all the while being nourished by surrounding cells. The follicle then undergoes a short hibernation phase of about three months, recuperates, and sheds the current hair strand attached to it before starting production back up. At any one time, about 10 percent of our follicles are in that resting state while the rest are happily pumping out luscious tubes of keratin.
However, the cycle can be interrupted or made shorter by a number of things, including when blood levels of the androgen Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) are too high, such as with AGA, or when the immune system is mistakenly compelled to attack the follicle, such as with alopecia (AA). It can also be permanently shut down when follicles are damaged beyond repair (we’re born with all the hair follicles we’ll ever have, so once one is taken out of commission, that’s that).
Congenital Hypotrichosis: This type of hair loss generally affects a person at birth and usually stays with them for the length of their lives. The majority of cases of this kind of hair loss are caused by genetic defects.

One famous example of Male Pattern Baldness being passed down the paternal line is Prince William’s hair loss, which has followed in the follicular footsteps of his father Prince Charles, and uncle Prince Edward.

4. And don’t shampoo every time you shower. “It’s shocking to me how many women skip conditioner when showering, which is the worst thing you can do for your hair — especially when you’re trying to grow it long — and it’s actually shampoo that you should be skipping as much as possible,” Townsend says. Here’s why: The purpose of shampoo is to wash away dirt and product buildup, but it can also take essential natural oils that keep strands soft and healthy along with it. When you really do need shampoo, be gentler on your hair by only lathering up at your scalp and then simply letting the suds slide down strands, hitting the rest of the hair as the water rinses it away.
Sometimes, hair loss is caused by a rare disorder called Trichotillomania, where a person pulls his or her own hair or the hair of others out of habit. This gives them a satisfying and stress-relieving feeling. Most of the time, they are unable to exhibit control and pull hairs without thinking. This is not a healthy practice, and people dealing with this disorder must seek medical help. This does not only deal with the effects of hair loss, but also relates to issues outside of a person’s reactions to his appearance.

A dermatologist may combine minoxidil with another treatment.
Finasteride was originally created to fight prostate cancer. It works by decreasing the amount of a hormone called DHT in the scalp. DHT appears to cause hair follicles in the scalp to become thinner, so by decreasing the levels of DHT, hair regrowth may increase and hair loss may slow down.
Great article thx!! I’m 38 and still have a full head of hair but I started to shed about 3 months ago. Typically ~15 hairs on my pillow when I wake up and 20 or so hairs on my hand after I shower. I also notice hairs on my desk during the day. I never noticed any hair loss before 3 months ago. I started to use rogaine 5% twice a day about a month and a half ago and the shedding accelerated. I read that is normal but should it still be doing this after 1.5 months? I haven’t tried propecia yet as I want to see if Rogaine will do the trick but will if the shedding doesn’t stop. Also, do you think stress can play a part in hair loss? I started a super stressful job about 6 months ago so thinking my hair loss could be related to that.
Corticosteroid: If your hair loss is caused by inflammation in your body, a dermatologist may inject a medicine called a corticosteroid into your scalp. This can help stop the inflammation that happens when a person has alopecia areata. A corticosteroid is different from an anabolic steroid.
